Educators share 6 ways the Build Back Better Act can support students, schools

You’re expecting a new addition to your family and just learned that although you’ve been teaching in your school district for years, you get absolutely no paid family leave to bond with your baby.

None. Zero. Zilch.

Maybe you’ve already had a child and are crunching the numbers on how much your son or daughter’s daycare is going to cost — and you realize it’s more than your mortgage. You wonder whether your family can afford the extra expense for the next five years until your child will be eligible for kindergarten.

Or perhaps it’s December and your school district is still hiring classroom teachers, school bus drivers, custodians, and teachers’ aides. It’s still looking for substitute teachers, too, and because they can’t find anyone, you’ll need to give up your planning period and work through lunch to cover for a sick colleague. You’re feeling firsthand the negative ripple effect of the staffing shortages, and they’re reverberating throughout the school community.

Does any of this sound familiar?

The good news is President Biden’s Build Back Better Act addresses these issues, and potential relief is in sight.

The Build Back Better Act, passed by the U.S. House of Representatives last month, is the largest investment in families and workers in more than a generation—and it’s all paid for by making the uber-rich and corporations pay their fair share.

The bill is now up for a vote in the Senate. If Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) gets his way, that vote will take place before Christmas. Then,  the House must vote again on the Senate version of the bill. The final step is sending the bill to President Biden to sign into law.  READ MORE.

  1. How about that we’ve already tried to vote in politicians that promise to do something and can’t because their hands are tied, due to big corporation interests, such as oil and gas. Our planet needs to be saved or none of these other things are going to matter. And, yes, I agree with an above statement, about how it’s okay to birth ALL children, but ten there’s no follow through with care, counseling, financial help, once the children are born.

  2. “Progressives” must not interfere with passage of this program. Spiteful threats to kill the program because it does not completely meet every one of their demands. Nor should people like Joe Manchin hold the program hostage. The sooner the population experiences the benefits of these programs, the sooner we can win more seats in both House and Senate.

    1. the greatest country, the richest country. right. women vote for republicans who take their right to decide what one can do with one;s body. poor people vote for republicans who refuse to vote for programs that directly help them. people support lies and fox news that wants to destroy our society. they vote for a party that take the right yo vote away from citizens. what is so great? who has all the wealth? this is cancerous. racism is cancerous. we have fake christians and fake patriots. moscow mitch and putins puppet, trump, control the political agenda. we are a satellite of russia and heading towards being a banana republic. God bless those who stand up for their rights. chk

  3. The Banana Republicans want to birth all children but do not support or have any plan to support our children in any way!

      Dear Americans,

      Ring around the polls
      Republicans on their toes
      Much to disclose
      Really foes
      Time to expose…..
      (published Dec. 1992)

I thank the Democrats for all they have done, over the 76 years of my life.
We need to speak to the people about Republican hindrance and how they have
effected our countries progress and hurt most of our citizens. Starting with,
President Obama, we need to inform our citizens; how the Republicans refused to pass Democratic legislation, spell out HOW it affected the country and “we citizens.” Every time a congressman or congresswomen speak, have at least 1 example. Unstable 45 should be exposed.. The robber barons have been the Democratic down fall. They are the real enemies!
      Our Governments self-serving bureaucracy
      Corporate greed/lack of responsibility
      Peoples’ prejudice/loss of integrity
      Organized religion, the medical community
      Scores more, ripping-off humanity
America! The land of the free!?
We need to get coverage on local News channels. Even the fox brainwashed,
      watch the local News.
Save our Country from crimes against all Americans and the Constitution.
      Continue to fight.
Especially the police racist policies. Name the Democratic bills that are being pigeonholed!

    1. Please describe what a ‘fair share’ is. Why is there a problem when someone or some enterprise follows the tax laws and pays what is legitimately owed. If you do not like the tax laws, vote someone into office who will change the laws. Maybe its time for term limits to drain the Washington swamp of anyone who has been there more than 8-9 years. Biden is a glowing example of decades of corruption and uselessness. Then the list never ends,,,,,,O’Connell, Schumer, Pelosi……on and on…….

  4. Is government working? Is it possible to have a more efficient, effective system for addressing the needs and preservation of our democracy? Please lead us to a better way of living for the greater good and becoming good world citizens. WE need to focus on our people and our habitat. Capitalism did not work for either. PLEASE BUILD BACK BETTER NOW!

    1. Have your union negotiate it with the school system. Or would you rather have your dues dollars continue to go to supporting the lame politicians who do nothing but piss away tax dollars?
