House sends infrastructure bill to Biden, advances Build Back Better Act

After a marathon session that began early Friday morning and ended late in the night, the House passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act by a bipartisan vote of 228-206; President Biden said he will sign it into law as soon as he receives it. The bill is a historic investment in roads and bridges, will lead to more good paying union jobs, extends the Secure Rural Schools Act, begins to eliminate lead pipes in schools and child care facilities, and invests in electrifying school buses to reduce emissions.

The House also took a step toward passage of the Build Back Better Act. A group of centrist Democrats refused to vote on it yesterday, but reached an agreement with progressives, House leadership, and the White House to vote no later than the week of Nov. 15 when additional fiscal details are released. The bill would be the biggest investment in the American people, the backbone of our nation’s infrastructure, since the 1960s—a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make a real difference in the daily lives of students, educators, and families. It will be paid for by ensuring corporations and the wealthiest Americans pay a fairer share of taxes.

The Build Back Better Act’s historic investments include universal preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds; more affordable child care and college; expanded access to free school meals; extending the child tax credit that has cut child poverty in half; and more resources for educator recruitment and retention, HBCUs, other minority-serving institutions, and the E-Rate program. It would also make the single largest investment in affordable housing in U.S. history; extend Medicaid coverage to 4 million more people; strengthen the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP); add hearing coverage to Medicare; lower the cost of some prescription drugs, including a $35 per month cap on life-saving insulin; and provide temporary protection and employment authorization for an estimated 7 million undocumented immigrants.

“America is at a historic juncture,” NEA said in a Nov. 4 letter urging passage of the entire Build Back Better agenda. “We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity—a chance for meaningful action on long-ignored challenges ranging from how we care for those who are ill or have fallen on hard times to ensuring every neighborhood has safe drinking water.”

  1. God’s children are all equal and should be treating each other with respect. How can anyone turn their back on the vulnerable? Disgusting!

  2. Build Back Better will help all Americans who are most vulnerable, and put in place a great safety net to move our country to meet the needs of those who have the least. We need this social infrastructure to be strengthened, especially paid medical and family leave, so during these times of pandemic problems, which are not going away anytime soon, workers can take care of their health and that of their children, elderly and sick loved ones, and get paid so they will not lose their food, their homes, their livelihood. Please pass BBB!! It is so necessary.

    1. Please Build America from the bottom up. We need your support and vote to advance the BBB agenda. Humbly thanking you, The McCombs

  3. We need this act if America is going to be great again. It is not fair that we are still living in a country where there still is more privileged people than not. Every child deserves a great education which is not happening in low income and racially divided cities and towns. Please think of our future which is the children.

      Dear Americans,

      THE PLAGUE
      Ring around the polls
      Republicans on their toes
      Much to disclose
      Really foes
      Time to expose…..
      (published Dec. 1992)

I thank the Democrats for all they have done, over the 76 years of my life.
We need to speak to the people about Republican hindrance and how they have
effected our countries progress and hurt most of our citizens. Starting with,
President Obama, we need to inform our citizens; how the Republicans refused to pass Democratic legislation, spell out HOW it affected the country and “we citizens.” Every time a congressman or congresswomen speak, have at least 1 example. Unstable 45 should be exposed.. The robber barons have been the Democratic down fall. They are the real enemies!
      EXPOSE
      Our Governments self-serving bureaucracy
      Corporate greed/lack of responsibility
      Peoples’ prejudice/loss of integrity
      Organized religion, the medical community
      Scores more, ripping-off humanity
America! The land of the free!?
We need to get coverage on local News channels. Even the fox brainwashed,
      watch the local News.
Save our Country from crimes against all Americans and the Constitution.
      Continue to fight.
      Sincerely
      DRL
      P.S.
Especially the police racist policies. Name the Democratic bills that are being pigeonholed!

  4. The mandatory Preschool is so over due. Without it being mandatory only the wealthy people can afford to send their children to preschool and that is not the only children that would benefit. Hence the wealthy have a head start. Please pass this.

  5. Our great nation needs the benefits of this Build Back Better Bill more than ever. We are the richest nation but our investments in our children & families has been abysmal! NOW IS THE TIME to make a positive difference for all Americans!

    1. The majority of the population need your support and your vote for the BBB. Humbly asking, The McCombs

  6. Because BigPharma billionaires own the entire republican party out right, and have purchased just enough democrats (Sinema and Manchin) to be their shills, we won’t have our prescription prices lowered by allowing Medicare to negotiate the best price, the same way our VA does for our brave, military men and women.

The provision of the Build Back Better Act that allowed Medicare to negotiate prescription prices had to be dropped because Moscow Mitch McQonnell’s republicans only need one democrat to vote with them, and against the the best interest of all Americans. Manchin and Sinema are glad to fill that role for the huge donations they both receive from BigPharma billionaires.

    1. We are senior citizens and are on a very limited budget. We need our prescriptions to help us make life better. Please support the BBB legislation. Humbly requesting, The McCombs

  7. This is long-overdue and much needed bill. Why should the wealthy, who don’t need financial help, be the ones to receive tax breaks when many people of our nation could use help so much more? This nation is falling apart so please do what’s right.

  8. you must be kidding– bidens bill is a joke — it does nothing for the poor and middle class. just look a the price of gas. i paid a 3.29 for reg and 4.09 for high test. this man has ruined our country in just 10 months. look at cost of food. as a retired teacher this administration as done more harm than good.. includling our schools… wake up nea member/// you must live under a rock.

    1. Absolutely. Tom. I cannot believe these people are so blind that they believe this anti American agenda is good for this country.

      1. Thank you both for your brave comments. Too much wasted monies hidden in this document that do not support our country nor its citizens. Many good pieces, but way too much wasted experiments that will be paid out on the backs of the poor and middle class no matter what the admin tries to spin.

  9. Equality should not just be a legal term, but our American goal for all citizens in all situations. Many people need support when faced with difficult medical situations.

  10. We also need to protect our votes from Republican tyranny. We must not allow our democratic republic to be undermined?

  11. The Senate will be even harder on the Build Back Better Act. Keep the pressure on. My Missouri Senators are hopeless on this bill even though our state needs every one of these programs.

  12. It is blatantly apparent that politicians opposed to improving health and other imperative supports for average and poverty people are too busy filling up gas in a houseboat or Maserati. There are other super wealthy politicians who say it costs too much and the countries’ debt will increase. Let’s reduce their salaries, not re-elect them and stop allowing them to have a government “career” for 30+ years. Tax the slippery rich because they need to pay the way we do. Too many loopholes. Infighting is fracturing and does not help “the people” or the ones they work for!

  13. Whoever stands in the way of progress and moving forward to a better country is UNAMERICAN and that is UNACCEPTABLE!!

    1. you must be kidding? joe biden is joke / go to the gas station and store to see massive infllation. lhis poliies have ruined this country in just 10 months. as a retired teacher i can’t believe nea would back this sending act. the poor and midlle class will suffer the most. if yoou believe it won’t increase our taxes you most live under a rock/ the parents in our school system just voted in 2 school board members who are againt crt. wake up and become a patriiot. stop this socialist agenda.

  14. s a constituent, I urge you to pass the Build Back Better Act that is the heart of President Biden’s domestic agenda.

The bill includes universal preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds; makes child care and college more affordable; expands access to free school meals; extends the tax credit that has cut child poverty in half; and provides additional resources for educator recruitment and retention, HBCUs and minority serving institutions, and the E-Rate program to keep students connected digitally at home. It also makes the single largest investment in affordable housing in U.S. history, extends Medicaid coverage to an additional 4 million people, expands Medicare to cover hearing expenses, and provides temporary protection and employment authorization for an estimated 7 million undocumented immigrants.

All of this will be paid for by ensuring big corporations and millionaires and billionaires pay a fairer share of taxes.

Overall, the Build Back Better Act is the biggest investment in the American people, the backbone of our nation’s infrastructure, since the 1960s—a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make a real difference in the daily lives of students, educators, and families.

Please support the Build Back Better Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

  15. I disagree with this act. It is wrong for our county. Stop the spending – this is out of control. Block this act. I’m a public school teacher and as single mom …. and I strongly DISAGREE with this act and all this irresponsible spending of my money. STOP IT!

  16. Republiklans are the problem…we have to pass voting rights be bills now!
Or the Republiklans will turn our democracy into a Fascist government!

  17. Our Congressmen/women need to work together for the good of all Americans. The Build Back Better Act is one way to help everyone. Petty politics is not how one should be representing their constituents.
