Senate to take up Freedom to Vote Act this week

The Freedom to Vote Act (S. 2747) would, among other things, create national standards so we can safely and freely cast our votes, make Election Day a public holiday, and ensure that every state offers same-day voter registration at all polling locations by 2024 (and at a limited number by 2022). Unlike an earlier version, this bill has the support of the entire Democratic caucus, according to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

“Senator Manchin has been engaged in conversations with our Republican colleagues in hopes of advancing solutions on a bipartisan basis to ensure all Americans have their voice heard in our democracy,” Schumer said. “I hope that our Republican colleagues will join us in good faith, and as I have said before, if they have ideas on how to improve the legislation, we are prepared to hear them, debate them, and if they are in line with the goals of the legislation, include them in the bill. But Republicans must come to the table to have that conversation and at the very least vote to open debate.”

The need for action is clear. More than 400 bills in 49 state legislatures seek to restrict voters’ access to the polls; they largely target voters of color, voters with disabilities, and low-income voters. America cannot be a beacon of democracy around the world when states are restricting the right to vote. Please use your voice: Tell your senators federal legislation is essential to ensure all U.S. citizens can freely exercise their constitutional right to vote.

Email your senators and tell them to protect our democracy by protecting our right to vote.

  1. I imagine the next demand will be to have ballots printed up in multiple languages…..ya know, …… for the Americans who can’t read or understand English

      1. Other than the language in which the Constitution is presented. Maybe we could have a Babylon. That would work well

    1. If non-English speaking citizens made it thru the citizenship testing, they surely had an English speaker helping them. As a retired ESOL instructor who has had the privilege of helping people grasp the benefits of understanding American voting, I would never deny any citizen the right to vote. Please remember the millions of people who came to America and fought for the right to live here, ensuring their descendants, us, all of the rights that we enjoy today.

  2. I am saddened and sickened by the actions of many Republican governors and members of Congress who are trying to take away our right to vote.. I used to be a Republican, but no longer am one and now consider myself to vote as an Independent. It is very hard to understand how some of our Congressmen and Congresswomen have been elected, as many are not competent to hold office. You listen to them on TV and are shocked at their ignorance.

      Dear Americans,

      Ring around the polls
      Republicans on their toes
      Much to disclose
      Really foes
      Time to expose…..
      (published Dec. 1992)

I thank the Democrats for all they have done, over the 76 years of my life.
We need to speak to the people about Republican hindrance and how they have
effected our countries progress and hurt most of our citizens. Starting with,
President Obama, we need to inform our citizens; how the Republicans refused to pass Democratic legislation, spell out HOW it affected the country and “we citizens.” Every time a congressman or congresswomen speak, have at least 1 example. Unstable 45 should be exposed.. The robber barons have been the Democratic down fall. They are the real enemies!
      Our Governments self-serving bureaucracy
      Corporate greed/lack of responsibility
      Peoples’ prejudice/loss of integrity
      Organized religion, the medical community
      Scores more, ripping-off humanity
America! The land of the free!?
We need to get coverage on local News channels. Even the fox brainwashed,
      watch the local News.
Save our Country from crimes against all Americans and the Constitution.
      Continue to fight.
Especially the police racist policies. Name the Democratic bills that are being pigeonholed!

  3. I use to be a Republican. When the Party tried to impeach President Bill Clinton on a variety of charges and couldn’t get proof, they went to his personal shortcomings. That’s disgraceful considering most of our ex-presidents had affairs outside of their marriage. That’s when I changed parties to Democrats. I split my vote depending on who I believed could be the better person. After the Trump fiasco, I will now vote straight democratic. Republicans, do what is best for OUR country, not your wallet!!!

    1. I have voted mixed ballots in the past. However the GOP is so morally bankrupt, I can’t think of a single Republican I would vote for any more.

    2. Remember this:

“If you have selfish, ignorant people, you will get selfish, ignorant leaders.”

      – George Carlin

Still truer than ever after 25yrs

  4. The main problem is that folks in charge “pretend” to look for fraud, don’t find any, and declare that it doesn’t exist. We’ve been told voter fraud doesn’t exist for so long, that folks actually believe it.

Every time someone actually, truthfully looks for voter fraud, they find voter fraud.

50,000 questionable ballots in Arizona alone. (Senile Joe won Arizona by only 11,000)

Michigan is prosecuting multiple people for filling out ballots en masse.

The 2020 election was FILLED with illegal voting procedures “because of the pandemic.”

We DESPERATELY need legislation that will require proper ID from voters. And harsh penalties for Cross-Border Invaders and any other vote fraudsters.

    1. “Voter fraud” is a right-wing buzzword for suppressing the vote. Voter fraud was not an issue in the 2020 election. The above claims about questionable ballots in Arizona and Michigan is pure Fox News b.s. Arizona recently completed a Republican-led audit of the 2020 presidential election. The state’s GOP hired an outfit called Cyber Ninjas (no kidding) to do the audit. Cyber Ninjas reported that Biden won by a bigger margin in Arizona, than had been previously counted.

  5. We need to remove democrats who don’t have democratic values. Manchin and Sinema are not in alignment with the party so why be in it? Power and money is what these two senators are all about. There’s more pressure on Sinema of course because she’s a woman but Manchin is just as bad or worse. Hopefully the truth will be revealed. As the former president would say it’s “sad”. They’re blocking our progress. 2 individuals. It makes no sense at all. We’ve got to unite to purge the party of people who forget what they’re in office to do. Either work for the people or leave. It’s that simple.

  6. While not as bad as trump, Manchin and sinema should be impeached, senator Coal dust and senator drug lover.

    1. Impeach Sinema and Manchin for ditching their constituency in favor of Big Money from Big Pharma and Big Dirty Energy

    2. Manchin and Sinema should not be allowed to hold office. They are far more concerned about personal enrichment than working to improve the lives of their constituents

    3. They are as bad as Trump because they are impeding the process of the American people. These bills are needed quite badly right now. People are starving and all they can do is talk garbage. People need help from their elected officials and they have fallen short of that duty. They are a disgrace to all Americans and should be recalled.

    4. Republicans should all be put up on trial for sitting back doing nothing or creating these problems and are voting structures lying to the American people the insurrection but the biggest crime is not allowing people to vote when we have people standing in line for 5 hours to vote hello where’s the Democrats it’s it’s appalling we’ve had nothing but problems for the last 20 years and nothing’s been done about it we need to get more Democrats in the Senate and in the house we need to get rid of these Republicans the Republicans don’t have enough people we lost tons of them because of trump to the independence so we have a lot more people now that are on our side and we need to be able to write executive laws or executive orders. I can’t believe I’m the only one saying this so why haven’t we gotten this stuff done now I know that there’s a lot to do but voting is mandatory putting Republicans and Trump in prison mandatory dealing with the insurrection mandatory and I know you’ve got experienced people in that white house Mr Biden there should not be any problems having it delegated and then brought back to you and then signed off

    5. While I do not know on what grounds they can be impeached, I believe they are both out of touch with the needs of most people. It is unconscionable to put off helping those in need, and bettering our society if we have the means to dip so. And, I know we do. Vote those who do not care out of office.

    6. Only judges and Presidents can be impeached. Senators can be expelled, however, ot just defeated he next time they run for re-election, and I fully agree with you that it’s high time for these two to go.

      1. Actually, we could expel Sinema (the two face traitor) if we elect Kathy Hobbs as governor. We wouldn’t have to wait four more agonizing years, we could vote to expel Sinema and Kathy could appoint another Democrat senator until next elections. Teaching Sinema a good lesson. Up to us in Arizona to do our duty and be vigilant in 2022.

    7. They are pandering to their big money donors, and throwing those that voted for and helped to get them elected under the bus. The are acting more like republicans who are only concerned with self interest and staying in power.

    8. They are Republicans dressed as Democrats! They got in on Democrat ticket! They are an embarrassment and should be impeached!

  7. Mansion and Sinema need to be held accountable for their abuse. Why not use Law Suits like DJT does ? Mansion’s coal company has many safety violations and no doubt former workers with Black Lung and other associated illnesses, Swamp Mansion with Law Suits, include his greedy daughter over Epi pens Prices. Do a recall on Sinema and have a qualified progressive ready to go in the new election.

  8. What a sad state this country is in thanks to the greed and power-hungry in the Senate. Corruption has routinely plagued our country to certain various extents but never has the rule of law been so blatantly and openly ignored. The one thing that Trump has proven is that if you repeat lies enough, people will blindly follow and believe. So much for critical thinking skills. So sad.

    1. Dear Honorable Leaders,

The Republicans are using the FILIBUSTER to block any effort to keepTrump from retaking the presidency.

They are using the FILIBUSTER to pass bills that STOP people from voting and to block everything that the Democrats in congress need in order to maintain DEMOCRACY in the United States

BUT we will NOT be able to pass anything if the FILIBUSTER is not ABOLISHED.

We can’t let the Republicans use the BIPARTISAN passing of the Infrastructure bill in the Senate to claim that there is no need to get rid of the FILIBUSTER.

They are using the FILIBUSTER to block every bill that

      RIGHT NOW!
Before we no longer have a FREE COUNTRY.

      1. Dale, run for office. You’ve got my vote! I am on board with absolutely everything you so eloquently stated!

      2. Unfortunately, we do no longer have a free country. Our Founding Fathers feared that we’d have a “tyranny of the majority.” What we have, currently, is a tyranny of the minority. In Wisconsin, Repubs have a 62+% majority in our legislature and Congressional representatives, from 46% of the voters, the result of what is almost certainly the most egregious gerrymandering in the history of this country. And when they lost every state wide race (including the governorship) in 2018, but still retained that same majorities, in lame duck session, they voted to make major decisions by both the governor & AG contingent on their approval. And after nealry 3 years, they still haven’t even voted on some administrative post appointments.

In the Senate, the 50 Repub senators represent about 41 million fewer Americans than the 50 Democratic ones. With the filibuster in place, McConnell’s “100% focus” to “block this administration” will keep this country from progressing-unless something is actually done about it. #EndTheFilibuster. #PassS1. #PassHR1.

      3. Yes the fillibuster needs to go! It isn’t in our Constitution and was a bill to deter our Democracy!! In a Democracy the majority is suppose to rule and the filibuster doesn’t allow that to happen! We must do away with this terrible restricted of our Democracy!!

      4. I agree wholeheartedly with each and every point you make and especially appreciate your thoughtful, civil presentation of those points.

  9. Maybe we should offer Manchin &. Sinema more money than the republicans paid them to turn on their own party and stab President Biden in the back.
We might be able to out bribe the republicans if we could find out how much they paid Manchin & Sinema ?

    1. Democracy is not for sale! Elected representatives have an obligation to God to honor the oath they swore to on the Bible.

    2. John, You are just speculating–this is not true! Manchin and Sinema have minds of their own and know the truth about Puppet Biden and his puppeteer administration who wants Marxism and Socialism. Surely you recognize this.

  10. Restrictions on voting will also hurt those with disabilities Keep our democracy pass this bill so there is no barriers to exercise the right to vote!

  11. Being able to vote is rooted in present day democracy, but the last four years have unfortunately unleashed some deep-seated ideas among most Republicans and members of the GOP. It is simply outrageous that we, as a nation, are still grappling with the idea that all men and women, regardless of color, religion and origin, have a right to vote. It is becoming more and more evident that we are dealing with an American Apartheid, that is becoming so severe that if the Suffragettes of yesteryear, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela would turn in their graves and go on a hunger strike in order to right this monumental wrong. Wake up America! Change your mind set or our government might turn into being a tyranny that will look more and more like Adolf Hitler’s National Socialistic followers as well as the other current tyrants the world still has.

  12. I can’t imagine a more democratically important bill coming before the House and Senate. Creating national and uniform standards for voting is simply commonsensical. We are not merely a collection of 50 independent states, each with differing requirements for voting standards; instead, we are a union with a common collection of American democratic rights guaranteed by our founding documents. To ensure fairness and voting equity, each voter deserves and thus should be able to expect the exact same voting rights and procedures, regardless of state residence. We should be doing everything possible to encourage participation in voting. A uniform and guaranteed set of voting standards, that are the same throughout the nation, only makes great sense.

  13. Pretty simple really. Show up to your assigned polling location on election day. Show your valid ID. Vote. Simple. Or if unable, request an absentee ballot per regulations.

    1. What if there is no public transportation to your polling place? What if your employer will not give you time off to vote? What if you are eighty five years old and the lines are five hours long? What if you have a physical disability? What if one has no valid ID and lacks the time and money to obtain one?

It is not “simple”, Marine Bob. The laws coming from red states are offering solutions where there is no problem, and creating problems where there is no solution!

      1. Totally agree with Stephen Karnisky. Democrats need to put aside the filibuster, as the Republicans did when they were in power to pass all of their agenda bills and push through the nominations of sex offender and drunk Kavanaugh as well as “Promise to repeal Roe v. Wade” Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Stop trying to be the “Good Guys”. The Republicans are not afraid of doing whatever they have to to “Get it done”!!!

      2. Liberal talking points. All stated without researching yourself. Absentee Ballots are the way to vote for those without transportation. Yes, it is that simple. All this other stuff is just BS. Don’t be stupid, be smart. Don’t treat people as if they are stupid. People can figure it out. If they want to vote, they will find a way.

Don’t believe all the Liberal talking points. We want all legal votes to count. Any vote cast fraudulently cancels out a legal vote. Go through the process and figure it out.

        1. You are right that absentee ballots are the way to vote without transportation- if your state accepts lack of transportation as a reason to vote absentee. Mine doesn’t accept that as a reason, you have to prove a disability or travel outside the county. They don’t even accept having to work on election day as a reason to vote absentee. In case you want to research and verify that this is the case, I’m referring to Kentucky. We are not allowed an absentee ballot simply because we have no transportation or have to work. And an eligible voter who doesn’t get to vote because of these restrictions distorts the outcome every bit as much as a fraudulent vote does.

          1. Next time, try and do a little more research. I found this information in under one minute.

            You’re welcome.

Kentucky absentee ballot rules are as follows.

You may vote by absentee ballot by mail in Kentucky if:

you are advanced in age, disabled, or ill.
you are a military personnel or their dependent, or an overseas citizen.
you are a student who temporarily resides outside the county.
you are a voter who temporarily resides outside of Kentucky and who
maintains eligibility to vote in Kentucky, such as a “snowbird”.
you are incarcerated, but not yet convicted of a crime.
you are employed outside of the county all hours the polling place is
you are a program participant in the Department of State’s Address
            Confidentiality Program

You can vote by absentee ballot in person in Kentucky if:

you will be out of the county on election day.
you are advanced in age, disabled, or ill.
you are a military personnel, their dependent, or an overseas citizen.
you are a military personnel confined to base and learn of your
confinement within seven days or less of an election.
you are a student or resident who temporarily resides outside of the
you are a voter or the spouse of a voter who has surgery scheduled that
will require hospitalization on Election Day.
you are a pregnant woman in third trimester.
you are a precinct election officer appointed to serve in precinct other
than his own, an alternate precinct election officer, County Board of
Elections’ members or staff, Deputy county clerk, or State Board of
            Elections’ staff

      3. Really is simple. Absentee if you can not make election day. If you are too lazy or so incompetent to not get an ID, you ought not to be voting

    2. Not so simple. In this spring’s election, my name was purged from the registered voter rolls. No reason, no notification; it was just gone. I found out about it in time to re-register, and in WI, where I’m from, we have same day registration. But not every state has that. And many have new laws in place making serious barriers to absentee balloting, with many more now being proposed. And when people who really can’t afford to take time off from work show up at the polls and have to wait 10 hours in line, perhaps only to be told that their voter ID isn’t sufficient & to come back later, that’s not exactly a viable solution, either. Or, to quote a phrase, “It’s not that simple.”

  14. Autocracy will not win in our country, democracy will. Let’s improve it and make it better and stronger than it’s ever been!

    1. Might want to check how this nation is set up. Federal laws are limited by the Constitution. States’ rights take precedence in many instances

  15. It is OUR country! WE must ALL be allowed in the process of making the choices, policies and laws that govern US and shape OUR LIVES.

The U.S. includes all of US!!!

WE the PEOPLE, by the PEOPLE, for the PEOPLE!!!!

    1. Maybe we should offer Manchin &. Sinema more money than the republicans paid them to turn on their own party and stab President Biden in the back.
We might be able to out bribe the republicans if we could find out how much they paid Manchin & Sinema ?

      1. They are not only stabbing President Biden in the back, there is a
great possibility they will have dismatnled DEMOCRACY.

    1. I’m asking legislators to pass the voting rights bills this week. The push to make it harder to vote is not for a democratic and free country.

  16. Stop siding with terrorists. Grow a set and do the right thing. You were elected to serve the people. Not a carnival con man.
