Senate to vote on key bills already passed by the House

During the month of June, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) plans to take up several NEA-supported bills already passed by the House that address priority issues for working people and vulnerable populations. Despite repeated efforts to move these bills in a bipartisan way, obstructionism has prevailed and mired the Senate in gridlock. Please urge your senators to push for action and support all four of the bills described below.

The Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 205) would require employers to demonstrate that gender is not the reason they pay employees different wages for the same jobs, prohibit employers from asking job candidates about their salary histories, and protect employees from facing retaliation if they discuss their pay with colleagues. Today, women earn just 82 cents for every dollar White men earn. This pay gap is even wider for Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous women, and exists across all occupations—including those that are dominated by women and vital to our nation, such as education and nursing. TAKE ACTION

The For the People Act (S. 1) rests on three pillars: reaffirming and expanding voting rights, strengthening oversight to end big money in politics, and ensuring an ethical government. It would, among other things, institute automatic voter registration, place new limits on partisan practices like gerrymandering, and require candidates for president and vice president to release their tax returns for the previous 10 years. The need for action is clear: More than 360 bills introduced in 47 state legislatures include provisions to make voting more difficult—for example, by shortening the time for absentee and early voting, requiring voters show an ID at the polls, and purging voter rolls. TAKE ACTION

The Equality Act (S. 393) would give LGBTQ Americans explicit protection from discrimination in key areas of life: employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service. The bill would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Fair Housing Act, and other federal laws to include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected characteristics. The current patchwork of laws—most states lack non-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity—leaves many students and educators vulnerable to discrimination and sends the message LGBTQ Americans are second-class citizens. TAKE ACTION

The Bipartisan Background Checks Act (S. 529) would require a background check for every gun sold and most transfers. Firearms are the leading cause of death for African American children, and the second leading cause of death for all American children. Everytown for Gun Safety identified 549 incidents of gunfire on school grounds between 2013 and 2019. The U.S. government’s K-12 school shooting database shows a record number of incidents of gun violence in the last 3 years—the most since 1970, which is as far back as the data goes. TAKE ACTION

  1. Please act as responsible adults and do what is best for our country. This is not a time to play partisan politics, it’s time to heal the country.
You are in a position of power and it’s accompanied responsibility to do the best for the nation.

  2. Dear Senators,
Please take action and support all four of the bills described below.
-The Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 205)
-The For the People Act (S. 1)
    -The Equality Act (S. 393)
-The Bipartisan Background Checks Act (S. 529)
I am a registered voter in North Carolina and have never missed a vote. I am depending on you to do the right thing.

  3. Joe Manchin: Why are you siding with the Republicans, by not siding with your own party? What’s in it for you? Do not be mistaken by thinking the Democrats who previously elected you will be voting for you again.

Please do not mistake the extra attention you are currently receiving as admiring attention. So just do right thing and stand with your party rather than lying down with Republicans.

  4. Democrats do you want Donald Trump back in Office and no Democracy or Democrats in Senate or the House soo vote on HR4 now

  5. These bills all deserve support by all of us! Concern for and support to keep us safe from those who wish to prevent voting of others, too, is being focused in many states. registering to vote should be easy, and all the others mentioned are important!

  6. Please do the job we asked of you when we voted for you.

Move past the stalemate! Vote these bills into law!

  7. This country certainly won’t need uneducated people. Much of work once done by warm bodies is already done by machine. Even more will be done by the machines based on artificial intelligence. Over the road truck drivers will be one of the first to be replaced by self driving vehicles as the requirements are much lower for interstate highway travel vs city streets and the drivers don’t have to rest and their speeds can be programmed so that the vehicles arrive at the loading dock at precisely the correct time. We have seen store checkout clerks replaced by machines almost everywhere. So your only hope of having a job will be to be educated in some area where the work is not repetitive. That can include a trade. It doesn’t include the often offered “Learn medical billing”. Educating the population is the only hope. The other choice is sit by some public building with a hat on the ground hoping for a handout.

  8. Senate you need to

    LOVE OF THE MONEY

    1. America 🇺🇸 is about the people, sustainability cannot be fostered in a climate of greed

    2. Please pass these bills! They are so needed and supported by the majority of the American public. Our democracy is in crisis if we don’t start to pass bills to protect our voting rights!

    1. I agree with you, Judy. I was a high school teacher for 20 years. Education is the foundation of our Country!

  10. I agree with Don! The Dems have NO HOPE in passing these fantastic and necessary Bills if Joe Manchin continues to screw up every possible scenario for the (supposed majority) to actually do what 70% of the country needs and wants. The greed and corruption of those lawmakers who only care about getting back their POWER, will again win over the wants of the people. Republicans who want to survive the assault on their party must vote out these criminals. The PEOPLE must RISE UP and defeat those who are trying to take over our Democracy. Trump and his Lie and all his followers are racists and seek to overturn our Democracy by wanting to re-instate him as President!!! Unless the Justice Dpt. do something about it and arrest him and his followers in Congress for SEDITION
there may be a Civil War based on White Supremacy.

  11. I am a teacher and I’m concerned about gun violence and have lost two friends sisters to gun violence. I believe people should have rightful gun ownership but you need background checks to make sure it gets into the right hands. Also, as a speech language pathologist working in the educational field in a female dominated profession and someone who got a masters degree, I think it’s unfair that I don’t get paid the same as a man with the same educational achievements.

  12. I am a U.S. citizen who has just returned to reside in the U.S. after living in Montreal QC Canada for fifty years. I will be a registered voter in PA and support the bills mentioned.

  13. Please approve these bills. They are vital to the citizens of the United States. Please restore my faith in the government; for far too long, politicians vote without considering their constituents’ views and desires. It is time for the government to work for the people.

Thank you from a registered voter in PA.

  14. It is very important that you back these bills. Most Americans live little to not enough while working for Minimum wage. In order to clear these situation up you must back these bills. There are so many issues that you must back:
    Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 205)
For the People Act (S. 1)
    Equality Act (S. 393)
Bipartisan Background Checks Act (S. 529)

  15. I am so sick of republicans. They all are liars and criminals. They don’t want to work for the people so they should be cleaning toilets which is more suited to them. there needs to be clauses allowing their expulsion when they don’t do the work they ae supposed to and then be banned from any and all managerial positions. government is supposed to work for the people not the other way around and that includes ALL judges. America is a democracy not a autocratic theocracy fascist cabal.

  16. Dear US Senators:

All of Biden’s bills will be helping all Americans as they offer the assistance which Biden campaigned on and were the reasons voters voted for Biden by a significantly large margin and which is the reason Biden’s bills poll favorably by large margins today.

  17. All of these bills should be passed. Senators represent the people who voted for them not their party and not Donald Trump. These bills would greatly improve conditions for all people. I vote in every election and am appalled how the GOP are trying to hinder voting. This is America! We need to be proud of our rights and responsibilities. I am heartsick about these GOP who take our money but do not listen to us.

  18. All of these bills conform to the tenets of our founding documents, the alternatives do not. These bills must be passed and enacted into law.

  19. All of these bills are vital for our economy and to help all families in America move forward

  20. Dear US Senators:

Pass all the bills that the House already passed. These bills would strengthen our democracy.
    So, please pass these bills!!!

    1. Please, supported bills already passed by the House that address priority issues for working people and vulnerable populations. Please, brace the repeated efforts to move these bills in a bipartisan way, obstructionism has prevailed and mired the Senate in gridlock. Please, our senators, push for action and support all four of the bills described below.

    2. I am a 70 year old retired elementary teacher that has been an activist for decades for human rights, equal rights, effective gun legislation that keeps everyone safe, and protecting our incredible planet that we ALL depend on for our very existence.
While our representatives have made some progress on these issues during my lifetime, it is not nearly enough as evidenced by many of these issues becoming much more pressing.
Please vote YES on these important bills, S. 1, S 205, S 529 and S. 393. They are needed to strengthen our democracy that is under attack by OUR represenatives who want to keep their jobs more than do their jobs to make our country a more fair and safer place for all.

    3. Numerous pressing issues (climate change, gun safety, immigration reform, prison reform, education reform, short-term lending regulation, healthcare reform, banking regulation, opioid regulation) remain vexing problems primarily due to corporations’ ability to curry favor with elected officials. The corrupting influence of money in our political system is undermining our democratic traditions and discouraging Americans from voting and/or running for office. This ominous development may well end our experiment in representative democracy unless we alter this decades-long trend. For the sake of the republic, we must amend the US Constitution to state that corporations are not people (and do not have constitutional rights) and money is not speech (and thus can be regulated by state and/or federal campaign finance laws). Short of accomplishing this, no other reform of significance will be achieved. The moneyed interests will turn any reform to their benefit, often at the expense of the nation as a whole.

    4. Pass the Democratic agenda lock stock and barrel! Stop the Republican obstruction.

      MAKE TRACKS NOW!

    6. Let’s make equality for all a reality . There is no Americans who should be denied their rights or benefits. Equality is an important component of a democracy especially for the United States and its citizens.

  21. Please pass these bills even if it requires getting rid of the filibuster, which needs to go also

  22. If you care for Democracy. KILL the Filibuster and pass the bills that will move forward this country. Otherwise the control is under the republicans. Sadly it’s the way it feels… Before your eyes the republicans are destroying us and you are still debating about the filibuster… it’s very disappointing. GO do your job… the American people (democrats, republicans and independents will appreciate it.

    1. Exactly – There is no reason this nation should be in such a dire boat!! It5’s time (way past time) for the benefits of this affluent culture to be shared by all!!

    2. Senate Democrats you are holding up all key legislation that was all ran on in 2020 Election soo do your job as Democrats

  24. I am in favor of the above bills. Thank you for putting the American people first and not party power. I am a registered voter in Oregon.

  25. Dear US Senators,
I urgently ask you to pass those bills. Our country needs a strong democracy and the voting rights of all Americans depends on availability and ease of voting.

  26. Why do I feel so hopeless when I hear “Senate to vote on key bills”? Am I the only one who is completely disgusted by Congress?

    1. Certain not. In order to change the way elected officials behave different people, those wishing to save Democracy. Meaning all of today’s Republicans must be defeated.

    2. GQP Evil BASTARDS…..

      August 6, 2019
      Dear Americans,

      THE PLAGUE
      Ring around the polls
      Republicans on their toes
      Much to disclose
      Really foes
      Time to expose…..
      (published Dec. 1992)

I thank the Democrats for all they have done, over the 76 years of my life.
We need to speak to the people about Republican hindrance and how they have
effected our countries progress and hurt most of our citizens. Starting with,
President Obama, we need to inform our citizens; how the Republicans refused to pass Democratic legislation, spell out HOW it affected the country and “we citizens.” Every time a congressman or congresswomen speak, have at least 1 example. Unstable 45 should be exposed.. The robber barons have been the Democratic down fall. They are the real enemies!
      EXPOSE
      Our Governments self-serving bureaucracy
      Corporate greed/lack of responsibility
      Peoples’ prejudice/loss of integrity
      Organized religion, the medical community
      Scores more, ripping-off humanity
America! The land of the free!?
We need to get coverage on local News channels. Even the fox brainwashed,
      watch the local News.
Save our Country from crimes against all Americans and the Constitution.
      Continue to fight.
      Sincerely
      DRL
      P.S.
Especially the police racist policies. Name the Democratic bills that are being pigeonholed!

    1. WEP????????
How can anyone not see how it robs the public servants ?
Politicians are public servants…..give me what I have earned?
How about your social security and your retirement from Government??

    2. Please do the right thing. Our democracy is at stake. As a naturalized American citizen, I’ve seen an erosion of collaboration among the 2 different parties and that poses a threat to our nation. Don’t practice “standoff”. Be “collaborative”; it helps everybody, regardless of party affiliation.

  27. Yeah, I just seen Joe (butthole) Moron – I mean Mancin on F the nation. If this person is someone passing for smart, we’re doomed.
Also, why isn’t Txxxp in jail awaiting trial for TREASON?
    Just saying.

    1. Please, supported bills already passed by the House that address priority issues for working people and vulnerable populations. 28. None of the legislation will survive the GQP filibuster in the Senate. The problem is REPUBLIQANS. Moscow Mitch McQonnell will see to it that none of the bills come to the floor, just like he did with the Supreme Court nomination of Merrick Garland, to stack the bench and create the Supreme Court republicans of the United States (SCrOTUS).

GQP SCrOTUS stopped the vote count in Florida 2000 to anoint George W. Bush as “Commander Guy” (W’s words, not mine).

SCrOTUS has also bestowed personhood (“of the people”) upon corporations, while declaring that corporate money is the “speech” to which the writers of our Constitution were referring when protecting freedom of speech of the people.

At this point, there are no “good” republicans, especially the lukewarm, squishy ones who smile and shake your hand while saying that they’ll “pray for you”. Disgusting.

  29. How does America take care, pride, & give All Americans an equal chance to better themselves & country?

By passing these Bills it will start Us on a path to be more than a 3rd World Country!

I am a veteran, I vote in every election, & I want Our Country to live up to
    It’s responsibilities!

  30. I’ve voted in every election since I was old enough to register, and actively participated in supporting candidates and their policies…and I’ll never stop. I actively encourage others to research and learn about policies, and since civics isn’t, quite unfortunately, taught in most high schools any longer, about how their government works. These bills MUST be passed.

  31. The proposed bills are most desirable for the voting public. Republican opposition is based
    on misinformation, lies, and paranoia.

  32. America’s future is definitely entwined with the education, safety and ethical fairness in serving all of our population. It’s time for government and private industry delivers true justice for all.
