Victory! And your advocacy helped make it happen

President Biden signed the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act into law on May 20. Introduced by Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI), it will strengthen federal efforts to address hate crimes targeting Asian-Americans in several ways: designate a Department of Justice employee to expedite the review of COVID-19 hate crimes, provide guidance for state and local officials for online reporting of such crimes, and require the department to issue guidance to mitigate racially discriminatory language in describing the pandemic.

  1. That there are hate crimes against anyone shows a profound ignorance among Americans (too many in-school “study sessions? too many bits of advanced material without the basics? too much varsity sports, proms, etc.? too little real history?) and a very low value of self among the bullies, so that they feel they have to make someone else inferior in order to respect themselves. It doesn’t speak well of the education system in the U.S.

  2. I am all for making a hate crimes bill!!! It is essential, and shouldn’t just be focused on Asian-Americans; Jews are the target of an alarmingly increasing number of hate crimes as well. What I don’t understand is why is this bill is linked to Covid-19? There should be no hate crimes during Covid, or after Covid!!! Hate crimes are unacceptable at any time!!! Does this send the message that as soon as the pandemic is over, it’s OK to go back to harming Asian-Americans? I hope not!!!

  3. Why do we need “Man’s Law” when it’s already addressed in the New Testament in the Bible? Let’s bring back God and Jesus into our classrooms.

    Mark 12:30-31 NIV
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

      1. There should be no hate in 2021! No, thanks to trump, trumpism. People that have a great love for all people, this is just disgusting.

    1. God is an opinion and neither have ever been in the classroom for very good reason. Hope that answers your questions.

  4. Will this apply to hate crimes against Jews – the number of which have grown enormously?

It seems the government is not that interested in protecting Jews who have contributed so much to the U.S. and are innocently attacked by Palestinian hate mongers . SO many US citizens are being fed false info and do not know the background of Israel. All hate crimes are terrible, but apply that to all groups who are under attack.

  5. It is about time! I am Vietnamese American since 1970 and taught high-school for about 20 years.I came here more than 50 years now., went to tell them to hire me. My students did not think I supposed to teach them because I was not American. It took me 2 and a half year to find my job. I could not fight the system so I did internship for one year with half pay, full benefit until I met an angel (he was the school psychologist and saw what I could do to help my all my students graduated from high school) They did hire me, I am thankful for many good people. I love education. We got all six children graduated from colleges. I got 7 teachings certificates and 3 college degrees. I am thankful for my education! I am a retired teacher and I am proud to be life-time member of UEA because my heart is still in Education. I have 4 children who are teachers and a husband who is university professor. Love education! Education made people get out of poverty and ignorance!

  7. We have so much work to do still! Thank you guys for making history let’s keep going! The Violence against women act needs to pass immediately!

  8. While there is no place for hate in this world, for an entity that is supposed to represent educators and education, NEA has truly lost focus with what members pay dues for. NEA espouses hate simply with their “Cheers, “Jeers” at the end of an email. NEA has no business in politics.
