Negotiations over COVID-19 package stall out

To provide more time to reach agreement on a comprehensive COVID-19 package, Congress passed a stopgap funding bill to keep the government running through Dec. 18. The outlook is unclear—at best. Moderates from both parties have endorsed the bipartisan framework introduced last week as a starting point for an agreement. But not the White House or Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who essentially said the GOP-held Senate would not pass a bill that includes state and local aid.

Students, their parents, and educators are all desperate for school buildings to reopen. Yet most school buildings remain shut due to public health concerns that include lack of funding to reopen them safely. A major sticking point is Republican opposition to state and local aid to avoid laying off educators, firefighters, and other essential public servants—a top priority for Democrats.

Key NEA goals for the COVID-19 package—for which we’ve been pushing since May—include at least $175 billion to stabilize education funding and provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for students and educators; at least $12 billion in emergency funding for the established E-Rate program to narrow the digital divide and close the homework gap; and  relief for student loan borrowers.

Take Action: Email Congress

  1. There won’t be schools soon to worry about if we don’t get relief to their parents. If this is really about corporate liability cover, then make it about that.

  2. I am sickened by Mitch McConnell and his band of followers. How dare they all deny Americans the help they need simply to SURVIVE through the next couple of months? We aren’t talking about luxuries here, we talking about keeping families off the streets and out of homeless shelters!! I hope and pray he feels some remorse this Christmas when he is enjoying a bountiful Christmas and many of his constituents are cold and hungry and homeless.
Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump are two of the most selfish humans I have ever known.

  3. Educators are holding the nation together through continued employment and caretaking of the nation’s youth. It is vital to consider the health and well-being of our education system.

  4. We demand that the Republican elected officials stop obstructing justice and pass critical financial funding to support educational needs during the COVID crisis. We the people have had Enough of your self-interest and lack of compassion. Shame on you! Your inaction is inexcusable.

  5. Those that represent us should have the same health care, pay and pension that we do. Many of us have held jobs that provide helpful services to others.

  6. McConnell must resign immediately. He does not care about average Americans. He is already wealthy as a result of his wife and rich father-in-law

    1. McConnel must resign! He cares nothing for everyday Americans much less the ones that voted for him or dump! He and his wife whose family are billionaires interests lie in keeping the ultra rich richer and running the rest of us into the ground. The disparity between wealth is enlarging and all they could focus on is the bogus allegations of voter fraud!

    2. Maybe the same remarks about McConnell can be said about Pelosi. She didn’t want to pass a $2 Trillion Covid stimulus package before the election, but now states that since we may have a new President, it’s Ok to pass an $800 Billion package. Where was your outrage at her? Hypocrisy much???

      1. She sent one in the Spring, man.

If you’re gonna hash out a policy issue, don’t regurgitate boring talking points that have already been addressed.

Whataboutism has never been a great argumentative strategy (relies too much on Strawmen, false equivalency, and/or compromise fallacy).

  7. It is time to stop playing politics with our health, safety and livelihoods. BOTH political parties must set partisanship aside to get a deal done that will benefit our people. Doing nothing does not help anybody! Get a deal done now!

  8. what more do you expect from a facist only looking out for other nazis who have been in control of this Country and our Democracy for the last four years!! Seems to me once the senior nazi is gone the 20th of January, the others will soon follow!! It’s time we as Americans start making the right decisions to protect our Democracy and to make sure what has happened these last four years never happens again in our Country!! One way to preventing this is by doing away with the electoral college just as soon as possible and making every vote count.

    1. If Congress and the President can’t get something worked out, maybe their pay should be cut off and given to those in need. There is not one in DC hurting, but yet they can’t agree to help those in need or even fund the Government they pretend to represent. If they can’t get the job done in a time of crisis it is time for them all to go.

    2. I fear that the 20th of January will not be the last that America hears from Trump and his followers. The riots, killings, and attacks, all sanctioned by the POTUS, are rampant now. What will happen in another four years and beyond? I wish what you wish, that Trump will go quietly and quickly away.

  9. Mitch McConnell, I hope you know you will have to stand before God and explain how you denied the least of His food and shelter. May God have mercy on your soul!

  10. Holding up this needed funding is cruel and heartless. McConnell is evil and only cares about his own power. It is difficult to comprehend why he keeps getting reelected.

  11. It’s a shame that our elected officials are stalling on helping their constituents. Enabling a President who is a madman is absolutely ridiculous. Following the advice of McConnell is appalling. DO SOMETHING NOW!!!!

  12. I urge you to allocate $175 billion to stabilize education funding and provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for students and educators; at least $12 billion in emergency funding for the established E-Rate program to narrow the digital divide and close the homework gap; and relief for student loan borrowers.
Further Corporations and businesses must be held accountable for worker health and safety. No passes on liability.

  13. If Congress and the President can’t get something worked out, maybe their pay should be cut off and given to those in need. 1. totally agree with this point of view. you need to walk in another’s shoes to understand. those who ignore those in dire need are beyond human and miss the point of representing the people

    2. Your duty is to the voters and they r suffering while u have an income the vote ‘re don’t so stop being greeding and selfish and pass a stimulus now

    3. Go home for Christmas Mr. Reid and look into the eyes of your family. Tell them that you have a grand Christmas planned for them with gifts, feasting, and joy. Never let on that many are cold and hungry this Christmas or that you have failed in your duty to your oath of office. Tell them you care only about them and enjoy your spoils. I hope you never have to face the problems of other Americans. Your hubris will survive only in the context of your failure.

  14. We need a Senate that works together for all people and not just for a choosing few , the “Good Old Boys Club” needs to GO! The Republican Senators don’t care about America nor Americans, their agenda is all about,”I Me and mine” and nothing else. Help to bring America back , our country is in a deep crisis ; pandemic, economy, public education, housing, systemic racism and etc.. America needs your HELP!!!

  15. Republicans- YOUR KING TRUMP LOST & WILL LEAVEVOR BE ESCORFEX OUT ON January19th! He LOST! YOU LOST! FACE it! STOP STALLING on approval A SECOND CARES ACT! Look at the Food lines in your state & all over the country!!! People are out of WORK, FOOD & MONEY FOR HOUSING!
iIMAGINE 40,000,000 ANGRY, HUNGRY, SCARED AMERICANS & DO THE RIGHT THING!!! Can you see a REVUTION COMING???? wAKE UP!!!

  16. We the People are dying! Please help put an end to our mass murder!
Wouldn’t it be better to be invited in when standing in front of the Pearly Gates!

  17. This is about “We the People” and the needs of the constituents and not about the elite and privileged who live in the White House and Hollywood. Please consider passing the bipartisan bill that could benefit millions of folks who are suffering from economic despair and our kids who are absent from school and would benefit for the education they
    deserve.

  18. Rev. Warnock and Jon Ossoff must win in Georgia to take away the power and control this disgusting human being has.

    1. Agree. I don’t understand the Republican/conservative philosophy of inflicting pain on people at every opportunity. Fear of high taxes, socialism? BS.

  19. Clipped toenails have more morals and more class than this repulsive excuse for a human. What a disgraceful waste of space !!!

  20. Now in a week to 10 day how many more people will come down with Covid? Since this virus kills can and will trump be prosecuted for American murders from Covid?

  21. It’s time for our government to show concern for the people, not the corporations. Politics do not belong in actions that mean the survival of families in need.

  22. I saw on the news that there was a Christmas Party at the White House.
I hope that our Michigan Senators did not attend that party, & if you did, SHAME ON YOU!!!
With all of the people in Michigan & the United States suffering & losing their jobs, businesses & loved ones due to COVID you should be using your energy helping them.

    1. We need to support people to not get sick from covid. Masks, social distancing, keep kids home from school until numbers are down. We need to be safe until this virus is under control.
      Thank you

    2. Shame on You!!!! People are in need of help! The President does not care about people and being present at the party just supports him. I am ashamed to call him our President for the way he is behaving.

  23. People are going hungry because of your inaction. Who benefits from this? Your corporate sponsors? You? The People did not bring this virus here. But your enabling of the incompetence from the president has only exasperated the spread of the virus. Be a man and put your B.S aside and save lives, NOW!!!

  24. Senator McConnell sadly I lost my dad to this virus two months ago due to someone coming into work and infecting him he was only 64 years old now my mom and I are heartbroken scared and forever changed and our life is harder there will be no happy holiday season for us probably ever again you owe it to the American people to fix this situation people are suffering homeless or about to lose their homes jobs are gone people are dying have compassion and show the American people you have a heart you are appointed by the people for the people how much will it take to get you to do the human thing and help us!? This is pure evil you can take action before it gets even worse our healthcare system is on the brink of collapse my mom and I are now without my father and many others have lost loved ones to this virus please help this country recover pass a package that is humane fair and for all don’t let the suffering continue do the right thing and pass a covid package that includes stimulus checks if people cannot put money into the economy it can’t function and more people end up paying the price possibly with their lives please help us! Pass the Bill! The president has failed us we can’t have congress fail us too! We are counting on you!

  25. McConnell needs to stop thinking only of himself for once. If he doesn’t want to do his job and help the American people than he needs to leave office-I’m sure it would make alot of people really happy if he did!

  26. Senator McConnell, you have enjoyed taking on the image of the Grim Reaper. I doubt you’ll enjoy it as much standing before God trying to explain denying help to the needy. You’re causing families to go hungry and lose their jobs, businesses, and homes. I hope God holds you to your image and sends you straight to hell.

  27. You must help the most vulnerable. The USA always offers help to other countries going through major events! Why not help us!

  28. Lives are at stake here! We elected you to serve all in our country not just your donors and those in your party. This legislation needs to be passed before you go home to your nice houses, full pantries, and technologies that keep you informed but safe.
Please come up with a compromise bill.

  29. Mitch has way too much power! Get rid of him so we can actually move towards healing the country. He is the worst evil human ever!

  30. Please, please get to work and pass a stimulus package for the American people. Negotiation means
compromise. It is time for you to do your job. Thank you.

  31. I am retiring due to the lack of funding to keep students and staff safe.
This needs to be o pass for the safety of our population.

  32. Moscow Mitch and his Republican senate buddies are shameful and immoral for holding up this legislation that many Americans need now as they are losing their homes and finding it difficult to pay the bills.

    1. Live were important a couple of month ago when there was a proposed $2 Trillion Covid package. Pelosi put a squash to that because it was before the election. Now that the election is over a we may have a new President, it’s Ok in her eyes to have a $800 Billion package passed. Hyprisocisy much. I’m ashamed at some of the language coming from supposed education colleagues. You all sound like high school children with a “Mob” mentality. Is this what the NEA is about?? Grow up!!!!!!
