Trump/DeVos budget slashes education funding

The Trump/DeVos budget proposal for fiscal year 2021, released Feb. 10, would slash education funding by $6.1 billion—8.4 percent—compared to the amount Congress provided this year. Lowlights include:

  • Replacing Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) programs with a block grant. Funding for Title I, Title II, English-language learners, community schools, rural education, and more would be combined—and then slashed by nearly $5 billion.
  • Failing to pay the promised share of special education funding. When Congress passed the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), it promised the federal government would pay 40 percent of special education costs. Under the Trump administration, the federal government’s share has fallen to a record low of 13 percent.
  • Robbing public schools of resources with yet another voucher scheme. Tax credits for money donated to “Education Freedom Scholarships” could divert up to $5 billion in taxpayer dollars from the U.S. Treasury to private schools.
  • Slashing student aid—again. Public service loan forgiveness would end, along with subsidized federal student loans. Work-study funding would decline by 55 percent. Parent PLUS loans would be capped at $26,500 and loans for graduate students at $100,000—far below the cost of multi-year programs like medical school.

Low-income students and families would also suffer under other recent Trump administration proposals, including big cuts in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (also known as food stamps) and the attempt to convert Medicaid to block grants—an approach repeatedly rejected by Congress. Here again, the push for block grants is a subterfuge for cutting benefits and limiting access for the most vulnerable.

  1. Sadly, this is just another example of the backsliding of America. We are now being run by a third world government, becoming as corrupt and dictatorial as any in the world (and we’re catching up fast). Maneuvers such as those mentioned are meant to consolidate power in order to keep “the masses” in check. Tell lies over and over again and (some) people will believe them as truth. Only WE can put a stop to this degenerative spiral: hurry November!

  2. It is outrageous how Trump and the unqualified (in every way) has taken billions from public school funding, and diverted it to public schools! This is totally against our Constitution, but when does Trump care about following our laws or Constitution? I am a lifelong Republican, age 75, but no more! I can no longer support the puppet party of the spineless, who follows this lying dictator! Defeat him at the polls! Save our country from his disaster of our country and to our constitution!! This is no longer the party of Reagan .I am now a registered Democrat! Any candidate is better than Trump.

  3. Wow, it appears that President Trump and the Republican Congress don’t understand that the future of this country is in the education of our children. Maybe Trump and DeVos are looking to become the king and queen over a population of illiterate subjects!

  4. Elections have consequences. So many people voted for this guy who appointed DeVos. If you are an educator or a parent whose school will be affected you own this if you voted for him. Your tax dollars will go even less far and your taxes will increase.

    1. I’m disgusted and sickened that we, the people of the United States are not more aggressive in stopping the undermining of quality public education for every single child.

We have enough power on the side of those who love our country and who know our children are our future. Why are these people not arming themselves against the evil that has taken over our Government? If we have to employ the tactics of Trump and his posse, why not?! We will be fighting for our Constitution and every decent resident in our country. We can’t counter Trump/DeVos with words. When will we play hardball?! Save our children! Save our country, and at this juncture, save the planet!

  5. DeVos hates public schools and puts her money in all the wrong places like charter schools. Trump will cut the education budget and all children will lose. Teachers put in enough of their own money in trying to teach their students now. They need more money, not less. We need safe schools, safe environment and a safe world.

  6. DeVos & Trump’s huge cut in Education is understandable since they are both non-Readers. The money saved will no doubt go to Trump’s WALL. KEEP IN MIND AT THE UP-COMING EECTION THAT THE REPUBLICAN CONGRESS IS GIVING FULL SUPPRT TO THIS SUPER-NARCIST PUTIN PUPPET AUTHORITARIAN.

    1. As an educator in a Title 1 school setting I implore you to rethink cutting funding for our students. Title 1 schools that equip students with Individualized Education Plans are very successful in filling academic gaps to help raise the bar for educational excellence.

    2. I don’t understand what the purpose of dismantling the education system, disrespecting teachers and taking away programs that provide assistance to students to help them. I have worked in education since 1991 and the changes I have experienced in the system has not been a positive change for many students….ever since NCLB.
The programs that they want defund or get rid of helps level the playing field for various students.
Has DeVos actually visited school around the country, especially in rural areas that public schools is the only option. They talk about how the economy is great….better than ever….really? Where is this at? Not in the rural areas….there aren’t any new jobs, or ones that pay well. With the tariffs, it has caused more hardship in the agriculture and businesses in the areas. In small towns throughout the country if there are no jobs, no businesses affects families, schools….so sad.
I haven’t heard any of the politicians talking about the poverty situation across the country. I see it everyday at schools.

    3. Our children are our future and cutting their education costs is WRONG especially if this is to get money for the Wall – which they’ve shown already can easily be climbed on to get into the US.

    4. In reference to his so called wall that a portion was partially blown down during a strong wind and can be compromised with a saws- all power tool.

  7. The future of our country depends on education. Trump and Devos are budget will cause a tremendous amount of hardship for students and families. They don’t care about the future of America, only how much money they can put in their bank accounts during the time they are in office. They don’t have to live with the repercussions of their actions afterward.

  8. When our public schools are devalued in support of elitist schools, it is one of the beginning steps in forming a totalitarian government. When the masses are not educated, they cannot resist the long, suffocating arms of the despicable dictators.
With each egregious step he takes, this wannabe “King” is destroying our republic.
We, as Americans, need to respond now, before it is too late, and take a stand for the sovereignty of our nation.

  9. To control the Judiciary, to destroy and privatize institutions like public schools, public libraries, the USPS, the prisons, is the explicit Neo-con plan for this country. Please read Nancy MacLean’s book Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right’s Stealth Plan for America, particularly the final chapter, to become informed about the heartless Republican agenda that has been in the works for decades and is destroying our democracy in the process.

  10. Please help support our Unions and the people that have any pull in local , state and Fed level to stop the evil man in the WH and his henchmen that do his bidding.

  11. Public Education is a foundation of a democratic society. The federal government can be an equalizer when states do not or cannot fund certain programs necessary for educating our youth. Taking away federal funding is against equal protection rights, especially for special needs children, whether the need is physical, emotional, or economic. Taking away public moneys to fund private schools steals money from the poor to give to the wealthy and well connected. If the Federal Government supports the equal rights of its citizens it should support and defend public education. Ms DeVos should step down, since she has shown no concern for public education and in fact has become its enemy.

  12. We continue to inflate the Defense budget at the expense of investment in human and humane services. The likes of DeVos and Trump are pure examples of adherents to misguided, reprehensible values. They must be stopped.

  13. Slashing educational budgets more than they are already cut? We as educators and teachers are already using our own money to pay for books, supplies, equipment to try help provide a quality education for our students? When are those in charge at the highest levels and don’t have to struggle, going to be willing to donate out of their own pockets to help pay for supplies, books, equipment, school lunches, busing, tutoring, school loans, extra curricular activities, educational salaries that are already hurting, and donate portions of their salaries and volunteer their time to help fund our educational programs and make it better for our students? If anything is going to be cut; it should NOT be education or programs that hurt our children! In a country where we are supposed to be equal and have equal opportunities for ALL? Our country is failing!!

  14. I’m disgusted and sickened that we, the people of the United States are not more aggressive in stopping the undermining of quality public education for every single child.

  15. Please don’t cut snap or work study . this is essential . as for education please see what you can do to not slash programs. I depend on SNAP and it isn’t enough i get in amount though i work.

  16. I used to live in a third world totalitarian regime and when I returned to the U.S. I was grateful for a democratic society sprouted form the roots of public education. N’ere more! The vulterism of DeVos and the sterile, saprophytic, vampirism of the Trump administration to raise the finger to the only element of society that equalizes the playing field, is a criminal, vomitous act and our democracy is defiled!

  17. This administration is determined to destroy everything throughout our country. What on earth is happening and how can this be allowed to occur.

  18. I made a point of sending my children to public schools, and will always be happy with that decision. Public education has been called the great equalizer and it can be. It seems for this very reason, DeVos wants to undermine it. She evidently doesn’t care to see all segments of society develop and succeed. Democracy depends on an educated electorate. Democracy depends on critical thinking, Enlightenment ideals and a sense of history. This is aiming high, but when we don’t, we end up with an ignoramus as President. We end up with folks who can’t source-out truth. We end up with folks who are less employable because they never had a chance to develop intellectually, or gain necessary employment training. This weakens America as a whole.

We need strong education funding as well as funding for SNAP which allows students to focus on learning instead of their own hunger. We need well-educated, well-paid teachers to do the important work. An underpinning of democracy is the ideal that all individuals are of value. Increasing financial support to public education is one way of demonstrating that.

  19. This can not happen. These cuts would hurt public education and college bound students that rely on these funds to achieve their dreams of going to college. If funding continues to be cut from public education the schools will not be able to service students the way that should be serviced.

  20. Stop trying to devalue and dismantle public schools. You are making elitists school and segregating the poor kids! How terrible of you to think this will help our children.. not yours because when you’re well off you can pay your kids disabilities or learning issues away

    1. Don’t cut education. Children are the future, and funding is needed to provide quality education for all. Trump is obviously backing Devos who wants to privatize education, and her vouchers and agenda to cut public education are a means to dismantle education.

  21. As a retired educator, this is nuts. More money should be poured into education. Compared to the rest of the world, we are losing any educated edge that we had. Why aren’t our bright kids going into medicine? The education cost, unbelievable hours and future salary. Wise up and start to make our nation better, not third world.

  22. Education is the cornerstone of a thriving democracy. Schools have never been adequately supported and funded. To cut already tight budgets is ludicrous and has far reaching consequences for us all.
Saying no to Betsy De Vos, and the current budget cuts is critical.

  23. It is sad that he is taking money from the people who need it the most, with others who choose to be separated and attend private schools and most likely could afford it without taking it from the public who would need it more.SAD!

  24. We have to stop this before we loose this country, and these idiots won’t be around for the fall out. God is showing us what we have to correct for a country and it is not the Devil God that is now being worshiped.

  25. I’m an elementary school counselor in Port Charlotte, FL. This is my 34th year in education. It’s heartbreaking and unacceptable to de-value children in this way. The very people who are voting for trump are the people who are hurt most by his policies. But he controls them by fear, lies, and incitement to anger. Voting en masse is the only solution we have left.

  26. Public education is and always has been an essential component of the American dream. Public schools are as good as or better than private schools in the education they provide to all children. Public education is the one institution that every American is connected to—either through current or past attendance, children’s attendance or grandchildren’s attendance. The country must continue to support the public school—including higher education institutions—through strong and continuous funding. Public schools are the foundation of American ingenuity, creativity, and strength. Fund public education at a high level—including special education which provides the support necessary to strengthen and enhance the skills of all children.

  27. I am opposed to the Education funding cuts proposal. Education funding should be increased- to raise teacher salaries, to allow implementation of additional programs for the brightest kids, to support special education and ELL to help these children be contributing members of society, and to increase federal subsidized loans to students. Stop funding charter schools which drain the regular public school funds and make education a priority. It is the only way for America to remain a world leader.

  28. This administration, once again, looks to favor the rich at the expense of those most in need!!!!! Save our Democracy!! Be active, be involved, be committed and we CAN flip the Senate.

  29. The DeVos creature has never earned an honest nickel in her life. Her entire fortune derives from her choice of uteri in which to gestate and choice of mattresses on which to procreate. The best thing this country could do would be to execute the entire Trump cabal, before it reduces us to a medieval feudal state. The power of any democracy varies with the median level of education in the electorate. We are becoming a democratic codpiece on a hereditary microcephalic oligarchy dedicated to rape.

    1. Execute people? Just like the communist do in China? You are a horrible person. Elections have consequences. You are no PHD, just a fool.

    2. It’s good to see a guy with a Phd can use those big words and still say nothing. Americans have never been better off. How long has the NEA been around? And in that time frame has public education been improved?

    3. Public education is the salvation of democracy. We now have private education encroaching on the funding for public education. We are now a banana republic which is great for private education. It is time to get our monies worth out of our senators. There is no concern for the common man. It is time to take back our country. The time has arrived to do this by the 2020 election. It is now or never. Clean the new disease ridden swamp. Vote for elected officials who care about our democracy. They vote according to people’s wishes, not out of fear and retaliation from party leaders.
      Save, fund, public education.

    4. Trump is blamed for our backward slide, and while I am very worried about how he has hurt on country, I blame voters for his political existence. Voters can change the news we are in and make our constitutions law great again.
DeVos is also a cancer to our country and our education system. I doubt she has ever taught in a classroom. She is a prime example of the swamp headed by Trump. We need to eliminate her and her mind from government.
Complaining alone will not bring change. Better VKTING will.

    5. I couldn’t agree more! Who does tRump think will be running the country in the future? Sorry, tRump, your idiot children just can’t do it all!

    6. That’s absolutely on the nail. No country can survive, let alone run as any kind of democracy without an educated public. We already have a situation in the U.S., where these people have removed Civics Education – 9 states only require civics; place now; Washington State passed a bill requiring one quarter of Civics to graduate recently, during the 2019 legislative session. Voting rights, history of the tribes on our lands, the “takings” of their tribal rights, the influence from England that has never disappeared – all these subjects (I could go on) are neglected in our children’s educations. And, that is the primary reason we have gotten to where we are now. With their careful planning for 1/2 a century, they are getting where the want – See Nancy MacLean’s “Democracy in Chains” for factual evidence starting in the 1950’s. Last year, Nancy said that they are close to their goal of dismantling the Constitution and unless we get more aware, we are done! GO PEOPLE!

  30. How can we cut these programs? I don’t understand how the GOP can promote pro-life yet not take care of the education and food of our future citizens. Education is the most important part of our democracy, and most children have access to public education. What are you thinking by cutting those funds?

Children need nourishment in order to learn. Why cut those finds?

  31. I don’t understand that anyone with an education would cut the funding for one of the most important tools (an education). Education and the opportunity for an education is one of the most important life skills. There are amazing folks that have had success without an education. I would bet that those same individuals surround themselves with highly educated folks. A well educated society is a generally a more stable society.

  32. Schools need the funding to work with all kinds of students and continue with existing federal programs run individually with more funding. College is the pathway for many young people to learn and economically it makes no sense to cut student aid. Young people today have so much debt they can’t buy homes, cars and contribute to our society at the level that is not so stressful.

  33. Our priority should be supporting the PUBLIC schools, which are legally required to take everyone in the local community. Instead, this administration seems intent on propping up private schools. Why?

    1. Public education is the right of every American child. As a retired educator, I worked with students from preschool age to college for 40 years. I see public education eroding from voucher programs causing public school program cuts. Stop this erosion, we need to continue educating our youth by providing master teachers, quality programs, and up-to-date technology opportunities. This cannot occur without funding; with so much tax money going to elitists schools where the poor and middle class students may not be able to attend because of transportation issues, parents’ work schedules, and even proper clothing. I’m looking for state representatives, senators and congress to vote for who are willing to enhance public schools.
