In a near party-line 51-41 vote, the Senate approved the nomination of Steven Menashi, an ally of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and presidential advisor Steven Miller, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine joined every Democrat present in opposing Menashi, described by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) as “a textbook example of someone who does not deserve to sit on the federal bench,” the Washington Post reported. NEA President Lily Eskelsen García tweeted, “[This is] a man who said that public education is bad because it promotes ‘egalitarianism.’” Though the outcome is not what we sought, your engagement played an important role that will inform future efforts. Our thanks to everyone involved!

  1. once again a shill of the Devos disaster is put in a position of power. this makes it another win for TRUMP THE TRAITOR !!! HOW DISGUSTING- OUR FOREFATHERS ARE DOING BACKFLIPS IN THEIR GRAVES. THIS COUNTRY IS A MELTING POT-THE US BENEFITS WITH THIS DIVERSITY. YET, DEVOS AND HER COHORTS OF IGNORANCE WANT TO HAVE A CASTE SYSTEM TO KEEP AMERICANS DOWN IN A LOW PLACE. BULLS..T. TRUMP THE TRAITOR ANS ALL HIS CABINET OF THE UNFIT NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM ANY POSITIONS OF POWER. WE HAVE BEEN SOLD OUT TO PUTIN AND KIM JUN UN-2 OD THE BIGGEST ENEMIES OF OUR COUNTRY. TRUMP LOVES THESE GUYS -BIRDS OF A “SCUMBAG FEATHER”. CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE-WHO THE HELL IS DEVOS AND ANYONE TO PIGEONHOLE A CHILD’S POTENTIAL. !!!!!!! WE MUST FIGHT THIS BITCH !!!!!

  2. We should declare a national day of humiliation, fasting and prayer to consider the decision of our lawmakers in promoting this individual. Thomas Jefferson helped promote the concept in the Virginia House of Burgesses when Britain closed the port of Boston and the rights of British citizens were denied. Now we face the process of denying American children and citizens the rights defined for them in the Constitution. Definitely a time for contemplation and prayer especially at this time of year.

  3. NO, NO, NO!!!
As a recently retired teacher of 44 years, I’ve seen the public school system from the inside. We need support from people who care about our students and want them to succeed and to be smart citizens, not people who only care about party lines by supporting only the party, and their own self-interest by letting kids grow up uneducated. This is about our future and our future rests on our students!

  4. The Founders wanted all people to have access to an education. DeVos and her ilk would like to see a caste system. We cannot let that happen. The United States was founded on the principles that anyone can be successful if they work hard enough. The best way to do that is to educate all people regardless of their race, creed, or religion.

  5. Interesting the people with whom this candidate, Steve Menashi, aligns himself.
Steve Miller is under scrutiny for his strong affiliations with White Supremacy Organizations.
Betsy DeVos has never attended a public school and is ill equipped to speak for public education in America.
If this candidate, Steve Menashi, shares any of the same values and views as Steve Miller and Betsy DeVos, I would question his commitment to and concern for public education in America.
I am a retired educator with 30 years of first hand, public school experience. I understand what it takes to educate every child in America.
Support those who champion public education and educators. Our children deserve to be served by people who care about America’s future.

  6. Please block Steven Menashi from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

    Thank you,
    Bruce Vogel,
    Public School Teacher

  7. He even looks corrupt . . . . . . how would DeVos even know what a viable candidate looks like? He’s an example of someone who does not deserve to sit on the federal bench. We need someone who knows and recognizes the needs of education in this country! Menashi is not that person!

    1. Where do these people come from and why now …?

Are we being visited by intentionally by some strange evil race of people from somewhere in outer space or some swamp in Mississippi??

We must always be vigilant and quick to recognize these types of people, these type who are always looking for opportunities to interrupt or poison intelli gent peace loving americans as well as people in other countries …. this person is dangerous and will always try to create confusion and hate within our society which we definitely don’t need !

  8. “…Menashi has been a member of the Federalist Society since 2008 and was an inaugural member of its Founders Club.” For those of you who don’t know, the Federalist Society is dedicated to using the courts to push our laws back into the 18th century. (This is defined as an “originalist interpretation” of our Constitution.) In fact, many of the judges and justices that McConnell has rammed through the Senate, by changing the rules, and even limiting debate to an absolute minimum, are similar regressive, reactionary, revisionist, activist ideologues. And McConnell is doing this after blocking literally dozens of Obama appointees, starting, as you probably do know, with the Supreme Court.

    1. This is an insult to all dedicated public school staff! It is beyond comprehension how much damage has been/is being done to students, staff, and families.

  9. Menashi is yet another disaster for our country! There is positively no ethics left in the repuplican party! Dear God, let demacrats take back control and get rid of the slime thats running our system before its too late if it isn’t already.

  10. If the Dems. had tried to clear a prospective justice to the appeals court as terrible, undeserving and biased as Menashi, the Cons would have been up in arms big time! Great that Collins joined the sensible side of this argument but the rest of the feckless, shortsighted bastards made a cruel decision. Are we out of appeals to preventing this unqualified & unworthy candidate from gaining a lifetime position to the Appeals Court?

  11. Trump’s appointees will get what’s coming to them after the next election, or, if they interfere with the election à la Putin, they will get much worse in the ensuing civil war.

  12. As a career Science teacher retired after 30 years of service primarily to adolescent multilingual newcomers immigrating to the SF Bay Area, This is. horrifying! Many of my former students are in UCs on the DACA program. If they are deported now, we will lose highly qualified multilingual Science teachers that are desperately needed in California and other sanctuary cities and states. More privatization of schools would be devastating to public education as private schools would use public resources for a select population of students.

  13. Stand strong people. We don’t have to settle for mediocre. Good quality public schools will continue and thrive if we continue to fight the good fight.

  14. We don’t need another De Vos in our government!! She has never been in the educational field and never taught to know what schools need. BUT they sure don’t need the FOR-PROFIT Charter Schools to be dipping into the public education pot of money. It’s the reason our public schools don’t have the materials and resources they need. All DeVos knows is how to control education. If she privatizes all the schools in the country, she will have set herself up or someone else up to PROFIT from Charter Schools that will teach religion and change the wording in text books in the Science and History areas of study. I don’t approve of Steven Menashi, friend of DeVos and Steven Miller, a known White Supremacist who will bring that sick ideology to schools all over the country!! NO ON STEVEN MENASHI

    1. The curious thing about DeVos and Trump and the rest of this lot of Mammon’s hookers is that few if any of them can claim ancestors who were here for the heavy lifting that made Ellis Island possible. The neo Republican Party is financed by people who have no family stake in this country except as a safe-cracker has a stake in nearby banks.

      1. Leavenworth, You are the prime example of what has happened to the Democratic Party. Your language is just as pathetic as some of the Republicans. Elections have consequences.
